Learn in depth how to plan and deliver a lesson that’s easy to teach and easy to learn from.
I was teaching fourth grade in inner-city Phoenix.
One afternoon I stood on a berm overlooking the playground where all the students in the school were out on recess.
Most kids were in small groups of two or three, scattered about the playground.
But one group caught my eye because IT WAS A MOB - a clump of over 20 students all playing together.
How weird, I thought. I wonder what’s going on there?
I focused in on individual kids in that group and discovered, to my surprise, that the group was MY CLASS of fourth graders. All playing together.
I realized in a flash that the cooperative learning I had been using in my classroom to help my kids do better in school, was also helping them become friends.
. . . Something unusual in a wildly heterogeneous class of kids from the poorest neighborhood of immigrants, homeless kids, large families living in 1-room apartments.
This image of my whole class feeling comfortable to play with each other strengthened my commitment to cooperative learning.
Over the years of having an online business and especially in these 2+ years when we’ve had no choice but to teach online, I have honed my ability to create cohesive, collaborative, cooperative online communities.
So that, like my fourth grade students, my online adult learners get to know, like and trust each other and me.
And when they do that, they are more likely to take action in my courses, get the success I had hoped for them, rave about me to others and come back for more.
Some feedback from my ADULT online course students:
Natalie, you’ve done an outstanding job, keeping us connected and in community! - Joan Brooks
I never shared like this in an online group before.
I am discovering I can do things I have never done and feeling more and more confident in expressing myself and loving the feedback and connection with others taking me out of my sense of isolation.
The feedback, seeing everyone’s great ideas and feel as if building a community of people who are passionate and want to make a difference
I’m impressed with the engagement overall, both my own and everyone else. I’m learning!
Natalie is very good at creating a close community and she is an awesome teacher which I'm sure you all have already noticed - Audrey Vaidya
